Glen Tanar

In August 2025, I enjoyed a trip out to the stunning location of Glen Tanar, to walk the Old Pines trail. The route is 8.3km and estimated to take a couple of hours, although with the stunning scenery along the trail, you’ll want to stop and enjoy the view.

The path is pretty easy going underfoot, apart from one section which is a little steep downhill with some larger rocks underfoot.

The starting point is at the Visitor Centre close to the car park, which has the usual facilities as well as some interesting information about the area.

At the start there’s plenty of places to admin the views from higher up. It was a stunning day with beautiful blue sky and baking sun – a perfect weekend escape from a week stuck in the office.

Scenic shot of blue sky with white clouds, hills in the background, pine trees in the mid-ground and ferns in the foreground.

Part way round the route, we came to this very picturesque bridge over the burn, as well as this artistic tree – one of my favourite photos from the trip.

Heavily wooded area, with a path to the left-hand side, and a stone bridge in the centre. To the left of the bridge is a tall pine tree with a split trunk, forming a Y shape.

Finally, as we looped back around to the start, I managed to capture another favourite image from the trip – this solitary fisherman out on his boat.
